Founded in Springfield in 1968 by George and Patricia Johnston, Johnston Companies began with a simple idea: deliver quality products and exceptional service to manufacturers. More than five decades later, the family- and woman-owned business continues that legacy under the leadership of CEO Susie Johnston Fox. Today, Johnston operates four distribution centers in Missouri and Oklahoma, serving customers in 48 states while remaining deeply rooted in the communities where it began.

Custom Inventory Solutions

One of Johnston’s most impactful offerings is its customizable Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) program, which combines smart technology with an expert inventory management team. For 25 years the VMI team has collaborated with customers to design inventory systems that improve efficiency, profitability, and deliver the right products at the right time. Assisting the VMI team are subject matter specialists (SMS) in safety and metalwork, as well as a factory-trained 3M specialist. The SMS work closely with customers to identify and offer solutions for their most challenging pain points.

Expanding into Aviation

In 2000, the company launched Johnston Integrated Technologies Aviation (JITA) to serve the unique needs of the aviation industry.. Despite early challenges following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the division sparked new growth, reinforcing Johnston’s ability to adapt and evolve while serving highly regulated, mission-critical markets.

With an average employee tenure of 10 years, Johnston invests in workforce development through cross-training, continuous learning and a values-driven culture guided by its 28 Johnston Compass Fundamentals. Johnston also supports Workshops for Warriors, which helps veterans gain advanced manufacturing skills.
