Control Service Company

Seven decades and counting

Founded by J.H. Gray and his son Joe, Gray Manufacturing was born from a simple observation: automotive repair shops needed better lifting equipment. That insight led to the company’s flagship air end lift jack, which quickly became a staple in dealerships and repair shops. As demand grew, Gray’s portfolio expanded to include lifts for heavy-duty vehicles. In the early 1980s, the company shifted away from a highly competitive automotive lift market and toward the heavy-duty vehicle sector. Today, with CEO Pete Gray (3rd generation) and his son Mitch Gray (4th generation) designs and builds a complete line of shop equipment for the heavy-duty industry, including its groundbreaking Wireless Portable Lift System (WPLS). For more than 70 years, Gray has remained fiercely independent, guided by an entrepreneurial philosophy that prioritizes customers, employees and long-term value.

Commitment to innovation

Gray Manufacturing invented the patent-protected and widely imitated wireless mobile column lift, which is now the worldwide industry standard. Thanks to the recent addition of a dedicated, state-of-the-art final assembly area, Gray has achieved even greater capacity, efficiency, safety and ergonomics. The company’s manufacturing process also utilizes robotic welding, computerized lasers, mills, lathes and press brakes. Data-driven decision-making throughout the organization ensures consistent quality and continuous improvement.

Raising industry standards

Every Gray lift is third-party certified by the Automotive Lift Institute and undergoes rigorous, full-capacity testing at maximum height. By never compromising on materials or components, Gray drives efficiencies through best-in-practice manufacturing. Even through the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic, Gray maintained uninterrupted supply, strengthened its workforce and expanded market share, proving that Missouri-made innovation and resilience continue to lead the way.
